Vacancy Details

The present window covers three ship-building support trades on contract basis at the Kochi unit:

  • Scaffolder Trainee – 60 posts (UR 24, OBC 21, SC 8, ST 1, EWS 6). Trainees completing the training satisfactorily may be considered for contract engagement as Scaffolders.
  • Safety Assistant – 13 posts, on contract for up to five years depending on project requirements and performance.
  • Auto Electrician – 2 posts, on contract basis.

For background, CSL’s earlier 2026 rounds covered around 210 permanent Workmen (ITI) posts, 260 Fabrication/Outfit Assistant contract posts, 64 Executive Trainee posts and 40 Rigger Trainee Apprentice seats (all closed between January and May 2026). Going by this pattern, fresh workmen and apprentice notifications are expected later in 2026, so keep watching the careers page.

Eligibility Criteria

Educational Qualification

  • Scaffolder Trainee: Pass in X Standard (minimum) up to XII Standard (maximum) from a recognised board — no ITI demanded, a rare entry-level PSU opening.
  • Safety Assistant: Pass in SSLC plus a one-year Diploma in Safety or Fire from a government-recognised institute/PSU, along with minimum one year of training or experience in the safety field in a PSU, factory, construction or engineering company.
  • Auto Electrician: Pass in SSLC and ITI–NTC (National Trade Certificate) in Mechanic Auto Electrical & Electronics (MAEE) or Mechanic Motor Vehicle trade.

Age Limit

  • Scaffolder Trainee: Maximum 23 years as on 22 July 2026, i.e. candidates born on or after 23 July 2003. Age relaxation of 3 years for OBC (NCL) and 5 years for SC/ST applies as per rules.
  • Safety Assistant and Auto Electrician: Maximum 45 years as on 22 July 2026, with 3 years relaxation for OBC (NCL) and up to 50 years for ex-servicemen as per Government of India guidelines.

Application Fee

As per the official notifications, General/OBC/EWS candidates must pay Rs 200 for the Scaffolder Trainee and Safety Assistant posts, while the Auto Electrician notification prescribes Rs 300 for General/OBC. SC/ST candidates are fully exempted in all three cases. Payment is online only (debit/credit card or net banking) and non-refundable; kindly confirm the exact fee for your post from the notification PDF before paying.

Salary / Pay Scale

Selected Safety Assistants and Auto Electricians will draw a consolidated pay of Rs 23,300 per month in the first year, with annual increases thereafter. Scaffolder Trainees will receive a stipend of Rs 10,000 per month during the three-month training; those absorbed as contract Scaffolders can expect around Rs 20,100 per month in the first year. Statutory benefits and exact allowances will be as per the official notification.

Selection Process

There is no lengthy written examination for these trades. Selection is skill-based and practical in nature:

  • Scaffolder Trainee: Shortlisting of applications, certificate verification, followed by a Physical Test of 100 marks. Qualifying marks: 50% for UR/EWS, 45% for OBC, 40% for SC/ST; the rank list is based on test performance.
  • Safety Assistant: Practical Test of 70 marks plus Physical Test of 30 marks.
  • Auto Electrician: A trade-based Practical Test.

Exam Pattern & Syllabus Highlights

Since the tests are practical, the “syllabus” is essentially your trade skill. Scaffolding aspirants should be ready for physically demanding tasks — climbing, load handling, balance and endurance at height. Safety Assistant candidates should brush up fire-fighting basics, industrial safety norms, PPE usage and shipyard hazard awareness. Auto Electrician candidates must be hands-on with vehicle wiring, batteries, starters, alternators and fault diagnosis. Those eyeing the next permanent Workmen (ITI) round should note the previous cycle used an objective-type test on trade theory and aptitude.

Admit Card & Result

CSL does not despatch call letters by post. Shortlisted candidates receive intimation on their registered email/SMS, and the admit card or call letter for the practical/physical test must be downloaded from the candidate login on the careers portal. The result is published as a rank list PDF on the official website, followed by certificate verification and medical fitness formalities. Keep checking your email, including the spam folder.

Preparation Tips & Document Checklist

With hardly three weeks in hand, focus on readiness rather than fresh study. Begin daily physical conditioning now if applying for Scaffolder Trainee or Safety Assistant — the physical test decides your rank. Keep these documents scanned and ready: 10th/SSLC certificate (age and qualification proof), 12th marksheet if applicable, ITI–NTC certificate, Safety/Fire diploma, experience certificates on proper letterhead, community certificate (OBC-NCL/SC/ST) in the central government format, EWS certificate of the current financial year, passport-size photograph and signature scans, and a valid ID proof. Wrongly formatted category certificates are the most common reason for rejection, so verify the format today itself.
