Candidates should beware of any agent or website demanding money for the SSC Tech application, as the official process on joinindianarmy.nic.in does not levy any charge.
Salary / Pay Scale
Selected candidates are commissioned in the rank of Lieutenant in Pay Level 10, with a pay range of Rs 56,100 to Rs 1,77,500 per month. In addition, officers draw a fixed Military Service Pay (MSP) of Rs 15,500 per month, along with allowances such as Dearness Allowance, Kit Maintenance Allowance, transport and various field/special allowances depending on posting. During pre-commission training at OTA Chennai, cadets receive a fixed stipend of Rs 56,100 per month. The overall package makes this one of the most rewarding officer entries in the country, apart from the honour of serving the nation.
Selection Process
One of the biggest attractions of the SSC Tech entry is that there is no written examination. The selection is based on the merit of engineering marks followed by the Services Selection Board. The stages are:
- Shortlisting — Candidates are shortlisted based on the cut-off percentage of aggregate engineering marks, stream-wise.
- SSB Interview — Shortlisted candidates are called to a Selection Centre (Allahabad, Bhopal, Bengaluru or Kapurthala) for a five-day SSB process.
- Medical Examination — Candidates recommended by the SSB undergo a detailed medical test.
- Merit List & Joining — The final merit list is drawn as per SSB marks and available vacancies, followed by a call for training.
Exam Pattern & Syllabus Highlights
Since there is no written test, the “pattern” here refers to the SSB Interview, spread over five days:
- Stage I (Day 1) — Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) test and Picture Perception & Description Test (PP&DT). Only screened-in candidates continue.
- Stage II (Days 2–5) — Psychological tests (TAT, WAT, SRT, Self-Description), Group Testing Officer (GTO) tasks, the Personal Interview and the Conference.
Aspirants should focus on Officer Like Qualities (OLQs), current affairs, defence awareness and their own engineering domain, as technical questions may come up during the interview.
