Vacancy Details
NLCIL recruits Graduate Executive Trainees across several engineering disciplines — typically Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Control & Instrumentation, Computer Science, and Mining Engineering. In the previous cycle, around 167 GET vacancies were released; the 2026 figure will be confirmed in the notification and may vary discipline-wise. Separately, NLC also engages Industrial Trainees each year — for example, an Industrial Trainee (Finance) batch of 56 seats for CA/CMA Intermediate candidates, and around 607 ITI Trade Apprentice seats under the Apprentices Act. The next batches of these trainee categories are expected to be advertised in their usual cycles; candidates are advised to treat the above numbers as indicative, based on the previous cycle.
Eligibility Criteria
Educational Qualification
- Graduate Executive Trainee (GET): A full-time regular 4-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology (or AMIE) in the relevant discipline, with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks (50% for SC/ST/PwBD), as per the official notification. A valid GATE 2026 score in the concerned discipline is mandatory.
- Industrial Trainee (ITI/Diploma): Pass in ITI in the relevant trade / Diploma in the relevant branch from a recognised institution.
- Industrial Trainee (Finance): CA (Inter) from ICAI or CMA (Inter) from ICMAI.
Age Limit
For the GET post, the upper age limit is generally 30 years for UR/EWS candidates as on the cut-off date specified in the notification. For Industrial Trainee (Finance), the upper limit is around 28 years (UR). Age relaxation is applicable as per Government of India norms:
- OBC (Non-Creamy Layer): 3 years
- SC / ST: 5 years
- PwBD and Ex-Servicemen: as per rules
Candidates are advised to confirm the exact cut-off date and relaxations from the official notification.
Application Fee
For the GET recruitment, the indicative fee structure (based on the previous cycle) is:
- General / OBC / EWS: approximately Rs. 854 to Rs. 1,180 (application fee plus processing charges with 18% GST), as per the notification.
- SC / ST / PwBD / Ex-Servicemen: exempted from the application fee; a small non-refundable processing fee of about Rs. 354 (inclusive of GST) may apply.
For the Industrial Trainee (Finance) engagement, generally no application fee is charged. Payment is made online through net banking, debit/credit card or UPI.
Salary / Pay Scale
Selected Graduate Executive Trainees are placed in the E-2 Grade in the pay scale of Rs. 20,600 – 3% – 46,500 (as revised, please verify the current basic pay in the notification). During the one-year training, an attractive stipend and allowances are paid, with the approximate CTC in the range of Rs. 9 lakh to Rs. 13 lakh per annum depending on posting and allowances. Industrial Trainees receive a fixed monthly stipend — for instance, around Rs. 22,000 for the Finance category and about Rs. 11,040 for ITI Trade Apprentices, as per apprenticeship rules.
Selection Process
For the Graduate Executive Trainee post, selection is based on:
- Shortlisting on the basis of GATE 2026 score (usually in a 1:6 ratio against vacancies, discipline-wise and category-wise);
- Personal Interview for shortlisted candidates;
- Document verification and medical fitness examination.
The final merit is typically drawn giving 80% weightage to the GATE score and 20% to the Personal Interview. For Industrial Trainees, selection is generally purely merit-based on the percentage of marks in the qualifying examination (ITI / Diploma / CA-CMA Intermediate), followed by document verification and medical fitness — there is usually no separate written exam or interview.
Exam Pattern & Syllabus Highlights
NLC India does not conduct its own written test for the GET post — the qualifying examination is GATE 2026. Aspirants must therefore focus on the standard GATE paper for their branch, which broadly covers:
- General Aptitude (verbal and numerical ability) — common to all papers;
- Engineering Mathematics;
- Core technical subjects of the respective discipline (Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Computer Science, Mining, etc.).
For the Personal Interview, candidates should be thorough with their core engineering fundamentals, final-year project, and basic awareness of NLCIL’s operations in lignite mining and power generation.

Admit Card & Result
Since the GET selection is GATE-based, there is no separate NLC written-exam admit card. Shortlisted candidates receive an interview call letter / admit card through their registered login and email, once the merit shortlist is prepared. The shortlist and final result are published on the official website, and selected candidates are informed individually for document verification and medical examination. For Industrial Trainees, the merit list and selection status are likewise released on the portal. Candidates are advised to download these documents only from www.nlcindia.in and beware of fake call letters, as cautioned by NLCIL.
Preparation Tips & Document Checklist
For GET aspirants, GATE preparation should remain the priority — a strong branch score is decisive. Alongside, revise engineering basics for the interview and stay updated on NLCIL’s business. Keep the following documents ready before applying:
