Eligibility Criteria
Educational Qualification
Candidates must hold a full-time Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering / Technology (B.E./B.Tech) in the relevant discipline from a recognised institute/university. The minimum aggregate requirement is 65% marks for General/OBC/EWS candidates, with relaxation to 55% for SC/ST/PwBD candidates. Candidates in the final year may also apply, but must produce proof of passing before joining, as specified in the official notification. Please note that SAIL, in this cycle, conducted its own CBT rather than relying on a GATE score — however, in earlier years SAIL recruited MTs through the GATE score, so aspirants are advised to check each notification carefully as the mode can change.
Age Limit
The upper age limit is 28 years (as on the cut-off date mentioned in the notification, which was 5 December 2025 for the current cycle). Age relaxation is applicable as per Government norms — 5 years for SC/ST, 3 years for OBC (Non-Creamy Layer), and 10 years for PwBD candidates (with cumulative relaxation for reserved-category PwBD). Ex-servicemen and departmental candidates get relaxation as per rules.
Application Fee
| Category | Fee |
|---|---|
| General / OBC / EWS | Rs. 1,050/- |
| SC / ST / PwBD / Ex-Servicemen / Departmental | Rs. 300/- (processing charge) |
The fee is non-refundable and is to be paid online through net banking, debit/credit card or UPI. Candidates are advised to keep the payment receipt safely. Exact fee slabs are confirmed each cycle in the official notification, so kindly verify on https://sailcareers.com before paying.
Salary / Pay Scale
During the one-year training period, a Management Trainee (Technical) draws a basic pay of Rs. 50,000/- per month in the pay scale of Rs. 50,000 – 1,60,000/- (E-0 grade). On successful completion of training, the candidate is absorbed as a Junior/Assistant Manager in the E-1 grade with a revised pay scale of Rs. 60,000 – 1,80,000/-.
Over and above basic pay, officers receive Industrial DA, HRA (or company accommodation), and a basket of perks and allowances under the “cafeteria approach” (roughly 35% of basic pay), along with Performance Related Pay (PRP), contributory Provident Fund, gratuity, superannuation benefits, medical facilities for self and family, and LTC. The approximate gross CTC works out to around Rs. 16–17 lakh per annum at the E-1 minimum, making it one of the more attractive PSU packages for fresh engineers.
Selection Process
The selection is a three-stage process:
- Computer-Based Test (CBT) — the primary screening stage.
- Group Discussion (GD) & Personal Interview (PI) — for candidates who clear the qualifying percentile.
- Document Verification & Pre-employment Medical Examination — final stage before the offer of appointment.
The final merit is prepared on the basis of marks in CBT and performance in GD/PI. For this cycle, the qualifying benchmark to be shortlisted for GD/PI was 50 percentile for UR/EWS and 40 percentile for SC/ST/OBC/PwBD candidates.
Exam Pattern & Syllabus Highlights
The online CBT is an objective-type paper of 200 questions carrying 200 marks, split into two parts:
| Part | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Domain / Discipline Knowledge (Technical) | 100 | 100 |
| Aptitude (Quantitative Aptitude, Reasoning, English Language, General Awareness) | 100 | 100 |
| Total | 200 | 200 |
Each correct answer carries 1 mark and, importantly, there is no negative marking — so aspirants should attempt every question. The technical section carries the bulk of the weightage and is drawn from the core B.E./B.Tech syllabus of your discipline, closely mirroring the GATE syllabus. The aptitude portion tests speed and accuracy on data interpretation, percentages, ratios, verbal ability, logical reasoning and current affairs with a steel/industry flavour. Working through previous years’ SAIL and GATE-style questions is the smartest preparation strategy.

Admit Card & Result
The admit card (call letter) is released online roughly two to three weeks before the exam and can be downloaded from the SAIL careers portal using your registration number and password/date of birth. For the current cycle, admit cards were released on 6 February 2026 for the 23 February 2026 CBT. Candidates must carry a printed admit card along with a valid photo ID (Aadhaar/PAN/Voter ID/Passport) to the exam centre — entry is not permitted without these.
The result is declared as a category-wise list of shortlisted candidates, published on the official website (result for this cycle was declared on 4 May 2026). Shortlisted candidates are then intimated about the GD/PI schedule and document verification. The final merit list is drawn strictly on the combined performance in CBT and GD/PI.
Preparation Tips & Document Checklist
A few practical pointers from candidates who have cleared SAIL MT:
- Prioritise your technical (domain) section — it carries half the marks and is where most selections are won or lost.
- Since there is no negative marking, do not leave any question blank; make an educated guess where unsure.
- Practise time management — 200 questions in the allotted time means roughly 36 seconds per question, so speed matters.
- Revise GATE-standard notes for your branch; the depth of questions is comparable.
- For GD/PI, brush up on steel-industry basics, SAIL’s plants and products, and current affairs.
Documents to keep ready: 10th & 12th mark sheets, engineering degree/provisional certificate and all semester mark sheets, caste/EWS/PwBD certificate (in the prescribed Government format), photo ID proof, recent passport photographs, and the online application printout.
